Local Transportation

  • Transportation within Detroit will be by charter bus and public light rail.

Airport transportation

  • Fly to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County (DTW).  Transportation to and from the airport is limited and expensive.  Event organizers are hoping to arrange shuttles.  Further information will follow.

Parking

  • Valet parking is available at the hotel.  Self-Parking is available at the other venues.

Thursday, June 8 / 1:00–8:00pm / Multiple Locations

Participants will begin with a Detroit and Highland Park bus tour on water and housing crises. Following on-site registration, the weekend will kick off with the 2nd Social Movement Gathering Opening Meeting and reception where there will be a short welcome and cultural water ceremony, a four-day overview, an analysis of the moment, a panel with frontline human service workers and families on issues with keynote speaker Reverend Barber (may change), followed by a reception and cultural activity.

  • 1:00-4:00pm: SWAA registration and business meeting at Hotel St Regis. Room
  • 1:30-3:00pm: Detroit and Highland Park bus tour on water and housing crises
  • 3:30pm: In-person registration begins
  • 4:00-8:00pm: 2nd Social Movement Gathering Opening Meeting and Reception

Friday, June 9 / 8:00am–5:00pm / Hotel St. Regis

Participants will take part in the 2nd Legal and Legislative Summit on Water, which will take place all day. In the afternoon, SWAA will be hosting a Social Movement Assembly featuring a panel and breakout groups with facilitated discussion on topics ranging from solidarity among workers to the role of human service workers in social movements. Both events will be followed by dinner offsite and a cultural activity.

After a light breakfast, the day will begin with a review of the last two days along with an overview of Saturday and Sunday. There will then be a discussion on historical reflections, lessons, and political analysis, along with a report and video from the New Poor People’s Campaign. The afternoon will consist of group introductions and panel reports and analyses on the crisis of water and sanitation in the U.S., international, and territories, followed by dinner and a cultural activity.

  • 8:00am: In-person registration and light breakfast
  • 9:00am: Welcome, review of Thursday and Friday, overview of Saturday and Sunday
  • 9:30am: Historical reflections, lessons and political analysis: The Civil Rights Movement, plus, a national report and video from the New Poor People’s Campaign
