Writing for the Journal of Progressive Human Services

The only journal of its kind in the United States, the Journal of Progressive Human Services® covers political, social, personal, and professional problems in human services from a progressive perspective. The journal stimulates debate about major social issues and contributes to the development of the analytical tools needed for building a caring society based on equality and justice. The journal’s contributors examine oppressed and vulnerable groups, struggles by workers and clients on the job and in the community, dilemmas of practice in conservative contexts, and strategies for ending racism, sexism, ageism, heterosexism, and discrimination of persons who are disabled and psychologically distressed. A member of the JPHS editorial collective serves on the SWAA National Steering Committee and many members of the Board of Consulting Editors are SWAA members.

Soapbox Article: Opinion piece
Requirements: Typically under five pages (double spaced). These may use some references but are not driven by literature reviews. These can address hot topics and read like a “letter to the editor”.

Notes from the Field: Article that discusses radical practice of human services, social justice activism, consumer justice, or ethical practice of human services that is perceived as a departure from professional norms. These read more like a qualitative study and may contain reference to strategies employed by radical social workers or social justice activists.
Requirements: Up to 20 pages double-spaced, written in APA format. If clients/inmates/service users/research subjects are being depicted, there would need to be a confidentiality arrangement and note about that in the article to ensure confidentiality, and the individuals would need to have given consent to be written about in an article. However, if those individuals are co-writing the article, their consent would be implied when they sign the copyright agreement to publish the article.
